A lone astronaut。
An impossible mission。
An ally he never imagined。

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish。

Except that right now, he doesn't know that。 He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it。

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time。 And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company。

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him。 Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery-and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species。

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone。

Or does he?

An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could imagine it, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian -- while taking us to places it never dreamed of going。

I enjoyed this book of science and science fiction more than I had anticipated。 The narrator, Ray Porter, absolutely made the book come alive in ways that would have gone over my head had I read it myself。 Looking forward to our couples book group night discussion。

I probably understood like 10% of all the scientific physics terminology in this book but a very fast read! I love rocky。

I was pleasantly surprised。 I read The Martian years ago, and was afraid this book would disappoint。 It had the science, which I like。 The story was fresh and interesting。

I really enjoyed this。 I went into it blind, so I am hesitant to discuss any plot-related details。 This is a plot-driven science-fiction/action story, and quite a successful one in my option。 I would love to discuss further over a coffee, a beer, or a tube of nutritionally adequate coma goo。

The book is a sci-fi thriller written in the first person。 It is about a scientist/school teacher, Grace who wakes from a coma, finding 2 dead corpses with him。 He uses basic science to determine that he is in a spaceship。 He has amnesia and gets flashbacks about his life on Earth。 He soon realizes that he is sent on a mission to save humanity。 The Sun's rays reach less on Earth and are more concentrated towards Venus because of an organism breeding in Venus’ atmosphere。 This depletion of the Su The book is a sci-fi thriller written in the first person。 It is about a scientist/school teacher, Grace who wakes from a coma, finding 2 dead corpses with him。 He uses basic science to determine that he is in a spaceship。 He has amnesia and gets flashbacks about his life on Earth。 He soon realizes that he is sent on a mission to save humanity。 The Sun's rays reach less on Earth and are more concentrated towards Venus because of an organism breeding in Venus’ atmosphere。 This depletion of the Sun will cause an apocalypse on Earth。 Grace is sent to another galaxy to find a solution to this problem。 In the flashbacks, we are introduced to Stratt who has been given full authority from all the countries to do what it takes to find a solution to the problem。 With Grace's help, she came up with the Project Hail Mary to save the Earth。 I like how the author portrays Stratt, as a strong character who can do anything without remorse to save humanity。 Grace on the other hand is smart, intelligent, and funny。 I really like how the author tried to simplify science stuff for the average reader。 (though some things were way out of line)。 It also felt like the author has done his research on space travel。Overall, I like the book a lot。 It is one of the well written sci-fi space fantasy books。 。。。more

Awesome!Extremely engaging, technically fascinating and almost believable。 Mind you, it's very much an engineer's book, light on feeling, but that's fully on character。 Also loved that the hero was flawed and showered believable growth。PS: I'm only sad that I never got to know about Stratt's fate。 Awesome!Extremely engaging, technically fascinating and almost believable。 Mind you, it's very much an engineer's book, light on feeling, but that's fully on character。 Also loved that the hero was flawed and showered believable growth。PS: I'm only sad that I never got to know about Stratt's fate。 。。。more

A fabulous Sci-fi novel。 All the details and the scenarios, and the way science is done in this book just leaves you in awe。。。 I loved the first 24 chapters though。 After that, it got way too melodramatic for my liking (but my friends differ from me in this, they loved it through and through)。 I really wish the ending was different, and it was what it was supposed to be from the start, I was really looking forward to seeing that。 But alas, now I am also left thinking about the possibility like R A fabulous Sci-fi novel。 All the details and the scenarios, and the way science is done in this book just leaves you in awe。。。 I loved the first 24 chapters though。 After that, it got way too melodramatic for my liking (but my friends differ from me in this, they loved it through and through)。 I really wish the ending was different, and it was what it was supposed to be from the start, I was really looking forward to seeing that。 But alas, now I am also left thinking about the possibility like Ryland Grace。 。。。more

I liked The Martian movie, haven't read The Martian book。 This probably works so much better as a movie tho so I'm excited for that。 Also, the guy couldn't bust out GarageBand/fruityloops/ableton? Gosh, this book is so good。 I give 5 stars out a lot (I'm encouraging that way) so this book deserves 6 stars。 It's got heart, it's got snark, it's got a whole lot of science and space, and (Mild Spoiler!) a bromance to rival all bromances。 One of the brilliant things about this book is that I'm not a science person and all the insane details and Science-ing were at least grasp-able for me and engaging。 Like the Martian, this book took me on a roller coaster of a story and I never could guess wh Gosh, this book is so good。 I give 5 stars out a lot (I'm encouraging that way) so this book deserves 6 stars。 It's got heart, it's got snark, it's got a whole lot of science and space, and (Mild Spoiler!) a bromance to rival all bromances。 One of the brilliant things about this book is that I'm not a science person and all the insane details and Science-ing were at least grasp-able for me and engaging。 Like the Martian, this book took me on a roller coaster of a story and I never could guess what else could go wrong or how Weir was going to end it。 It kept me on my toes and I have been delighted to go on the ride。 15/10。 Go get yourself a copy。 。。。more

What a great book! Andy Weir has an exceptional ability to incorporate the reader into a very astrophysics/space based world。 If you liked The Martian movie, I definitely recommend this book。 I wish there was a second installment for this series, maybe one day。

Not normally into sci-fi but this one got me in the feels!

I’m not usually into sci fi but I loved this book! My initial impression was that the tone of the book was very simple/informal but the plot was very intriguing! I’m not a physicist or space nerd, but I did enjoy the science。 I’m sure an expert would find some holes in it, but I thought it was well-done。

I thought it was very good。 It was entertaining and thoughtful, worked into a good sci-fi story。There was still a lot of science and math like The Martian, but it didn't feel as overwhelming as that book did。 I thought it was very good。 It was entertaining and thoughtful, worked into a good sci-fi story。There was still a lot of science and math like The Martian, but it didn't feel as overwhelming as that book did。 。。。more

This book is fine。 The plot is compelling, it moves along fast, the science is -- well, to me at least the science was total gibberish, but convincing and thus acceptable gibberish。 So, all in all, it's a fine book。 But reader, I regret to report that this is the corniest book I have ever read。Anyone who read The Martian is going to come in to this prepared for the cringe-y comic relief and the done-to-death bits。 But even knowing they're coming, it's grating。 Does the stern bureaucrat character This book is fine。 The plot is compelling, it moves along fast, the science is -- well, to me at least the science was total gibberish, but convincing and thus acceptable gibberish。 So, all in all, it's a fine book。 But reader, I regret to report that this is the corniest book I have ever read。Anyone who read The Martian is going to come in to this prepared for the cringe-y comic relief and the done-to-death bits。 But even knowing they're coming, it's grating。 Does the stern bureaucrat character have a bunch of jokey lines about how she totally knows she's a stern bureaucrat? You know it! Is there a Russian character? Is his name Dimitri? Does he speak English with a grating Beeg Trobble Vor Mooze and Squeerl accent? But of course。 (Or as Dimitri would probably say, "English I am speaking, but the sounding is quite cartoon, yes?") Is there an honest-to-goodness alien being that is written exactly the same as our human characters, to wit an insufferable doofus with a terrible sense of humor? Better believe it。And, of course, is our hero an unremitting dork who can't let a chapter go by without a dumb pun? Does he just happen to possess all the collected scientific knowledge of the last thousand generations, from the number of stable isotopes of lithium to the circumference of Neptune to the dimensions of a mitochondrion? Yes, to go with faultless insight and a tireless work ethic and unmatched courage。 Thank goodness he has such a dumb sense of humor, I guess, or people might find the whole Mary-Sue-but-also-Batman-and-Stephen-Hawking thing sort of implausible。 And then there's the writing。 When I mentioned the plot earlier, I should have mentioned that it takes long breaks so that characters can spout whole paragraphs of science-gibberish exposition at each other, careful at all times to sound completely unlike actual human beings engaged in conversation。 I mean:"Neutrinos routinely pass through the entire planet Earth without hitting a single atom—they’re just that small。 Well, it’s more about quantum wavelengths and probabilities of collision。 But suffice it to say, neutrinos are famously hard to interact with。 But for some reason, Astrophage has what we call ‘super cross-sectionality。’ That’s just a fancy term meaning nothing can quantum-tunnel through it。"I solemnly swear this is only a small snippet of a stretch of "dialogue" that somehow managed to stretch for multiple Gobi-dry pages。 And there are dozens of stretches like that in this book, technical details unspooled in a didactic lifeless way that makes a Tom Clancy book look like The Waste Land。Anyway, this book is a runaway best-seller enjoyed by lots of people smarter than me。 Which is good! It's just not for me, which is a good thing for me to keep in mind the next time everyone is telling me I just *have* to read the new Andy Weir。 I don't! You can! Good luck! 。。。more

3。5。 This is a great story- in fact I would ha e loved for it to be longer- but the characters were disappointing。 Andy Weir writes Loveable Geeky Hero really well, so it's a good thing this is another book where the Loveable Geeky Hero is alone for a good chunk of the story。 The female characters were one-dimensional and the alien came distressingly close to being a Noble Savage。 However, the plot was compulsively readable and fun。 3。5。 This is a great story- in fact I would ha e loved for it to be longer- but the characters were disappointing。 Andy Weir writes Loveable Geeky Hero really well, so it's a good thing this is another book where the Loveable Geeky Hero is alone for a good chunk of the story。 The female characters were one-dimensional and the alien came distressingly close to being a Noble Savage。 However, the plot was compulsively readable and fun。 。。。more
